 Acklington Fish Counter

We are delighted that the new fish counter at Acklington seems to be counting fish!. We will continue to post the numbers within 24 hours of receipt from the Environment Agency, although we are also in the process of arranging training so that we can download and interpret the counts ourselves.

Major funding secured for Aln Fish Passes and Coquet Side Streams

We are delighted to announce that the NRT has been successful with securing funding for two major projects!  On the Aln, we will be working with the Northumberland Estate to deliver 5 technical fish passes plus habitat works and sharing farming best practice.  This work is funded by the Water Environment Grant plus support from the Northumberland Estate and will run for two years.  On the Coquet Side Streams project we will be working on the Hazon, Longdike and Tyelaw Burns to reduce sediment, imrove habitat and create wetlands, also over two years.  More details to follow!

Also on the Aln, the Aln Angling Association has a new website at www.alnangling.co.uk

Hooked on the Coquet

We have started work with six local schools to get young people excited about one of our amazing rivers and the wildlife it contains.  The work is funded by the Community Foundation and Muckle and will explore invertebrates, riverside wildlife, river processes and manmade impacts, tree planting and introducing kids to fishing.  We held our first amazing (and tiring!) session with Harbottle school on Monday 25th March when kids rightly quizzed us on climate change and plastics.  Particular thanks to Rothbury Golf Club who provided a golf buggy so that one less abled kid could be fully involved.

We also held a great session with Felton and Swarland Schools but unfortunately bad weather meant that we had to postpone a day with Dr Thomlinson and Thropton schools.

More sessions to follow in the coming weeks!

Med Burn Improvements

alt
We are pleased to have been able to complete this project funded by the Environment Agency to improve this tributary of the Pont.  We delivered 1.69Ha of priority wetland habitat to help capture sediment and nutrients and planted 1500 trees and hedge plants with volunteers (many thanks to all who endured some challenging weather!)  The project also fenced off 500m of stream from stock and created a new fish easement at a bridge culvert. Hopefully this work will start to pay off in the coming years and help restore this stream to its previous condition.

Large spring salmon starting to appear in our rivers

Great to see that there have been some impressive fish showing up in the Coquet (and probably elsewhere).  These seem to be bigger than in previous years.  Well done to Davy who caught and returned this 14lb fish above Felton.

 Coquet Improvements

We are in the process of updating our list of improvements to the Coquet (see ‘Our Rivers’ page, ‘Coquet’) and hope to include more details and photos.  More to follow.
